Northwestern Raleigh County in southeastern West Virginia... Northwestern Fayette County in southeastern West Virginia... East central Boone County in central West Virginia... * Until 400 AM EST. * At 314 AM EST, a severe thunderstorm was located near Van, or 10 miles southeast of Madison, moving east at 50 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and nickel size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. * Locations impacted include... Oak Hill, Montgomery, Smithers, Van, Burnwell, Powellton, Whitesville, Handley, Sylvester, Leewood, Dawes, Prenter, Eskdale, and Dorothy. This includes the following highways... West Virginia Turnpike between mile markers 57 and 79. Route 19 near mile marker 10.

INSTRUCTION: Remain alert for a possible tornado! Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Cumulus clouds are fluffy and textured with rounded tops, and may have flat bottoms. The border of a cumulus cloud is clearly defined, and can have the appearance of cotton or cauliflower.

Cumulus clouds form at low altitudes (rarely above 2 km) but can grow very tall, becoming cumulus congestus and possibly the even taller cumulonimbus clouds. When cumulus clouds become taller, they have a greater chance of producing precipitation.
