AREAS AFFECTED: Keweenaw; Ontonagon; Houghton; Baraga; Marquette; Gogebic; Iron; Dickinson; Southern Houghton

DESCRIPTION: The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued an Air Quality Alert from noon EDT Saturday July 12 through noon EDT Monday July 14, for elevated levels of fine particulates (PM2.5). Pollutants are expected to be in the Very Unhealthy (Purple) to Unhealthy (Red) AQI range. The alert is in effect for the following Michigan Counties, Keweenaw, Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, Baraga, Northern Houghton, Ontonagon, Gogebic, and Southern Houghton. It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases such as asthma. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and eyes. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or higher rated filters. A fractus cloud (scud) is a fragmented, tattered cloud which has likely been sheared off of another cloud. They are accessory clouds, meaning they develop from parent clouds, and are named in a way which describes the original cloud which contained them.

Fractus clouds which have originated from cumulus clouds are referred to as cumulus fractus, while fractus clouds which have originated from stratus clouds are referred to as stratus fractus. Under certain conditions a fractus cloud might merge with another cloud, or develop into a cumulus cloud, but usually a fractus cloud seen by itself will dissipate rapidly.

They are often observed on the leading and trailing edges of storm clouds, and are a display of wind activity.
