Special Weather Statement issued August 28 at 3:39PM AKDT by NWS Anchorage AK
AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Copper Valley; Western Copper Valley; Central Copper Valley; Ernestine; Southern Copper Valley
DESCRIPTION: The strongest wind gusts will range from around 35 mph to near 55 mph, with the strongest gusts focused along the Copper River Valley north of Kenny Lake and along the Richardson and Glenn Highways north and west of Glennallen. Winds will begin to diminish tonight into Friday morning as the front pushes to the east. People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown around by the strong winds and use caution while traveling. Winds could coincide with periods of moderate rain, potentially making driving difficult at times. Trees are still fully leafed and will be unusually vulnerable to damage from the strong winds. Localized power outages will be possible due the potential for strong winds to bring down tree branches onto power lines.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
