AREAS AFFECTED: Prince of Wales Island; Ketchikan Gateway Borough
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Temperatures up to around 80 expected. * WHERE...Prince of Wales Island and Ketchikan Gateway Borough. * WHEN...From noon to 7 PM AKDT Saturday. * IMPACTS...Individuals not accustomed to these unusually warm temperatures for this region may experience heat related illnesses. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Warm temperatures are expected Saturday, reaching into the high 70s to low 80s. Warm temperatures will continue through the rest of the weekend and into the start of next week. Expect the warmest temperatures to be over inland areas.
INSTRUCTION: Drink plenty of fluids and check up on elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances as vehicle interiors can reach extreme temperatures in as little as 10 minutes Take extra precautions when working in the sun. Wear sunscreen and lightweight, loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke Close curtains during the daytime to reduce sun insulation into the home and open windows at night to allow the home to cool off. Utilize fans or community buildings with air conditioning.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
